Destruction Series

The inspiration for this piece is the process of deforestation and all the destruction that it causes. Approximately one and a half acres of forest is cut down every second, instantly destroying the homes of millions of creatures. This is causing entire species to become extinct and further fuelling the tragedy of global warming and associated climate change. The trees in these pieces represent all that have so far been destroyed. The process of sandblasting is used to represent the relentless forces that are using up our forests. The pieces start off as complete and functional vases, but as ceramic is worn away, the less functional they become. The work represents fragility, a metaphor for what we are doing to trees and the natural world. Despite appearing delicate, these pieces are stronger than they look, representing how resilient nature can be. They will not give up the fight against the destructive activities of humans, but will we relinquish enough to give them this opportunity to rebuild?
