Bee Swarm
This piece celebrates bees, showing the viewer how beautiful and important they truly are. It aims to challenge some people’s opinions around their fear of being harmed and raise the issue of their decline. Bees are disappearing at a shocking rate due to harmful practises, such as the use of pesticides, destroying their habitat and increasing global temperatures. The bees engraved are honey bees, as this species pollinates on a mammoth scale. The composition of the bees shows a swarm around the glass, presenting them in one of their most vulnerable states, akin to their current position within nature. Each bee is engraved in a very delicate and intricate style, further illustrating their fragility. There are twenty bees on this piece, each one representing one thousand. This total forming a conservative figure for the lowest numbers that can exist within a colony, with the queen taking prime position at the front of the vase to show her significance.
